One to One

Why have a one to one?

I can tailor an individual class to suit your needs, whether it be for a particular health issue, as a sporting individual with specific requirements or if you are not comfortable in a class environment.  The one to one gives me time to understand your body and look at ways to improve your posture, mobility, balance or any areas you feel you need support.

If you are new to Pilates and would like to learn the movements and terminology before joining a class this would also be beneficial to you.

History of Pilates

Joseph Pilates was born near Düsseldorf, Germany in 1883.  As a child he suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever.  He worked hard to find exercise tehcniques to improve his asthma and physical fitness.

In 1912 Pilates lived in England and trained as a boxer, when the First World War started he was interned with other German nationals.  During his internment he started to develop techniques to improve his physical fitness further and taught his fellow internees.  He used springs from the hospital beds to create an exercise technique to help the injured, bedridden patients and this led to the innovation of some of the Pilates equipment that is used today.

In 1926, Pilates emigrated to New York, he met his wife, Clara, during this journey, and they set up a studio and developed and taught the method they called Contrology.

Joseph Pilates died in 1967 at the age of 83.  Clara worked with his apprentices, “The Pilates Elders” who were trained by him, to continue to pass on this knowledge and create the Pilates method that we know today.

I do need some personal information and medical history and this will be collected electronically before the appointment.

I have to ensure that it is safe for you to exercise and that you provide your consent.

You need to wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, leggings or jogging bottoms and a t-shirt are fine.

You will need a mat to work on, you can get some that are slightly thicker, this helps if you have any issues kneeling.

You may need other equipment but not to begin with, if you decide you like Pilates then I can advise you on anything else you would need.
